Voile La

Pat Patterson design, launched in 1987. A robust, stylish and comfortable family cruising catamaran. Only 8 metres and  yet sleeping 6 adults with features not normally found in monohulls of the same length; take her to the beach, swim in shallow warm waters, sunbathe on the 4 meter wide foredeck. Very seaworthy, these marques have sailed the world’s oceans. A deep centre cockpit means they are great for young families with children.

Saloon

Although Heavenly Twins are only 8 metres by 4 metres, they are surprisingly spacious. We have upgraded all the furnishings to give her a light, comfortable and cosy feel. All seating and cushion covers are fully removable for washing or dry cleaning.

Galley

A well equipped galley with cutlery, crockery, cookware,  gas hob, grill, microwave, cool box and fridge. There are two 220/240 volt sockets provided by an on-board inverter giving 1000 watts total, for an electric kettle, smoothie maker or other appliance. There is also full standing headroom in the galley.

Head

The Starboard hull, with full standing headroom, holds both the Nav Station and the head. The  head has a modern hand pumped jabsco toilet bowl, service parts are available everywhere, there is fitted a waste holding tank which can be emptied either at sea or at a marina. The wash bowl has hand pumped water.   There is a shower sump moulded into the floor, this is coupled to a grey-water tank which is hand pumped to empty. There is however no shower fitted to Voile-La as we enjoyed alfresco showers in the cockpit when at anchor or used the marina facilities when ashore.

Navigation Station

Compact yet functional nav area. VHF (dsc and mmsi),  Navtex and A.I.S receiver, are all interconnected with Garmin GPS. Also an RS232 interface is installed to connect up to laptop for e.g ‘MaxSea’or ‘OpenCPN’

HERE

Cockpit

Safe and spacious centre cockpit with access forward to Saloon and aft to two generously sized Cabins. All control lines lead to the cockpit for safer sailing.

HERE

Aft Cabins

Two identical (mirror imaged port & stbd) double aft cabins with full  standing headroom. Generously sized with ample storage space. Wake up to a sea view through the rear portholes which also open to provide a cooling sea breeze. Rear access to both engines by removing storage cupboard. Cupboard contents can remain during removal. Stereo sound speakers in each cabin controlled from CD system in Navigation station.

HERE

Port engine room.

YANMAR 2YM15 15 HP DIESEL

The ‘workhorse’ of the boat,  smooth running , 7 knots from this engine alone. The 60 amp alternator plus Sterling advanced charge regulator ensures the batteries are always full. Accessible from the galley and also from the port aft cabin.

Starboard engine room.

YANMAR 1GM10. 10 HP DIESEL

Mostly used for manoeuvrability; going astern using both engines and close-quarter steerage. A strong reliable engine. Also has a Sterling charge regulator connected. Accessible from the Navigation area and from the stbd aft cabin.

Antifouling

Voile-La’s hull was stripped right back, removing all the old layers of antifouling, primed and re-antifouled in August 2013

Miscellaneous

2 x 100 watt solar panels put out around 14 amps/hr at peak and 2 alternators with output 60 amps/hr and 40 amps/hr respectively,  feed the deep cycle batteries (2 X 140 amp), giving plenty of power for the boat to be totally self sufficient during a passage or at anchor and no longer require an electrical hook up whilst in a marina or on a town quay.

Dinghies in the Greek islands are more a ‘luxury’ than a necessity, as almost all ports allow (and welcome) stern-to mooring onto the town quay.  And, as Voile La has only 2 feet (0.68m) of draft, she can be parked so close to the beach it is easy to swim or wade ashore.

Hi, we are Bill and Helen, her current owners. We bought Voile-La three years ago, having found her in her current location in Greece on the beautiful island of Lefkada.

Having previously lived all year round in the Canaries and for a year in the Caribbean on our beloved 40′ ketch ‘Spangle’, we liked the idea of owning a small Catamaran in Greece to be able to explore all the Greek Islands, having both independently fallen in love with Greece during the 70s & 80s.

One of the great pleasures of the yachting lifestyle has been meeting and socialising with other like minded travellers. We have been invited on many other boats and the appeal of one day owning a ‘cat’ was inspired by the following

OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE – a lovely wide cockpit for sitting and eating out, a spacious fore deck for sunbathing, with the room to place sun chairs and/or air beds

STABILITY – the pleasure, whilst sailing, of being able to freely walk around the boat and put down mugs of coffee in the cockpit without them spilling.

JUST PICK UP THE ANCHOR AND GO – on our monohull we were used to having to stow everything carefully away down below before even the shortest passage

ANCHORING JUST OFF THE BEACH – with a shallow draft (Voile-La draws just 0.68m) it is possible to anchor much closer to the shore in the beautiful turquoise shallows.

Our research into the various cats available for the sale on the secondhand market resulted in us favouring the Heavenly Twins. Here is some of the information we found:

The Heavenly Twins catamaran was designed and built by Pat Patterson, his Mk I being launched in 1971, followed by Mk II and III in 1975 and 1977 respectively. Then in 1981, with innumerable improvements on previous models in terms of sailing ability, safety and comfort came the Mk IV, followed with further improvements in 1987 by the Mk IVa.

The HT Mk IVa is widely enjoyed by the solo yachtsman, couples, and is a popular choice for families with young children due to her deceptively spacious interior, safe centre cockpit and the reassuring safety feature of additional forward reserve buoyancy tanks introduced on this model (buoyancy chambers were installed fore and aft in both hulls from Mk IV onwards, as earlier models sink if holed, unless extra buoyancy installed).

To see how the HT has developed over the years and to fully appreciate the differences between the models we recommend you click on the attached link http://www.htowoa.co.uk/page.php?13

Our extensive search to find, what was in our opinion, the best HT for sale at that time took us from the south and east coasts of England, finally to view two boats in Greece and ‘Voile-La’ was the one for us.

When we found her, Bill’s considered opinion of her was ‘yes, she’s a very clean and tidy boat’. This was our starting point. Having previously lived on ‘Spangle’ as our permanent home, by this time we knew exactly what was needed to upgrade her to meet our needs and lifestyle to be able to live on her all year round.

Most importantly to us, we upgraded her batteries to deep cycle to ensure sufficient electricity to run the navigation equipment, galley equipment, our laptops (as we run our businesses over the internet), built in stereo sound system with speakers in all cabins, portable entertainment systems (TV, DVD player, iPads), mobile phone chargers, wifi router and the in-built Eberspacher heating system for winter. There is also  a three way fridge (240v/12v and gas) and a microwave oven.

We used laptop navigational equipment and, though we have retained the laptop, the rs232 connection has been left installed.

Due to unforeseen family commitments over the past three years our plans to live on board all year round became unachievable and we have been predominantly land based.

One or both of us have been out to Voile-La each year staying on board for varying periods between six weeks up to three months. With the exception of last Winter, when we left her in the water under guardianage in Tranquil Bay, Nidri, Lefkada, she has been hauled and stored each Winter in Cleopatra Boatyard, Aktio, Preveza.

Last Summer the hull was stripped right back to remove all old layers of anti-fouling, primed and re-anti fouled before going back in the water late August 2014. (See photos).

Early May this year, 2014, we have been out to clean, tidy and refurbish ‘Voile-La’ ready for sale as being land based has now for us become permanent for the foreseeable future.

Voile-La is a very clean and tidy boat for her age, surveyed by a local English surveyor, before we bought her, and our aim has been to present her as a floating home/holiday home ‘Ready to Go’. We hope the large number of photographs we have taken reflect this.

We have removed all our personal possessions so everything you see in the photographs comes with the boat. We have also removed all the ‘junk’ that you so often inherit with a secondhand boat. No dusty sticky old jars of marmalade left on the shelves! Anything we have left is because we think it will be useful.

In the galley, there is a good range of cooking equipment – 2 ring gas hob & grill, microwave, built in cool box, free standing fridge, saucepans, 3 tier steamer, frying pans, bowls, jugs, cooking utensils, cutlery, small plastic storage containers (very useful sizes for fridge). Navy blue and white striped dining plates, side plates, bowls & mugs. A selection of glasses. There is a brand new water filter system (still boxed as we did not have time to install).

There is also a mini ironing board, travel iron and vacuum cleaner on board.

The saloon seating has been refurbished in navy blue and white butcher’s stripe, with matching cushions and plain red scatter cushions, rug & table mats. All the seating and scatter cushions have removable covers.

The saloon can be laid out in three ways – (1) as a lounge area, (2) with a dining table (when not in use the dining table stores flat against the forward bulk head), (3) as a third sleeping cabin (makes a very large wide double berth located next to the head so you could say it has it’s own ensuite!)

The head is very clean, white and spacious. There is also lots of natural light from the windows making the large mirror above the hand basin ideal for shaving and applying make up. Two storage areas beneath the hand basin are ideal for storing toiletries.

There are new navy blue and white bathroom accessories (soap dispenser, tooth brush holder and toilet brush and stand) together with new fresh looking navy blue/pale blue and white towels & face flannels.

There is a compact yet functional navigation area with a folding chart table, including a selection of local charts and books. These were largely left by the previous owners as we used laptop navigation. There are tools, fire extinguishers(one in the nav area, one in the galley), first aid kit, 4 self-inflating life jackets, navigational equipment, inverter & power switches and meters.

The cockpit cushions have been recovered in plain navy blue fabric. The piped pale blue PVC waterproof covers that were on Voile-La when we bought her are still good so have been left underneath. These are still serviceable and very practical in the Winter when the cockpit is more likely to get wet. In the Summer, when they are in the sun we have found them very hot to the back of the legs! We think the new owners will enjoy the comfort of the cooler fabric and there are coordinating navy blue & white and red & white butcher’s stripe scatter cushions for additional comfort. All covers are removable.

It was our intention to make a matching Bimini for the cockpit but unfortunately we ran out of time on our last visit. The frame is insitu and the matching plain navy blue material has been left on board should the new owner like to do so.

The cockpit also has a white PVC circular table which easily dismantles for storage below deck.

The bedding in the aft cabins is also new and has not been used (white mattress covers, duvets & pillows, navy & white duvet covers, red pillow slips and two navy/red scatter cushions). These cushions also coordinate with the cockpit cushions if required.

What are our favourite things about owning Voile-La?

‘the freedom to go exploring wherever we want and to be able to move on to the next bay or island on a whim’

‘to be able to eat and drink inexpensively on board yet have a more stunning view and ambience than many of the most expensive restaurants’

‘to be at anchor where we have our own detached accommodation with far reaching sea views surrounded by the biggest swimming pool you can imagine’

‘to have our own home in Greece available for our exclusive use or that of our friends and family whenever we feel like getting away’

‘using the kayak around the boat at anchor – great fun for kids!’

We hope Voile-La’s new owners will enjoy all of these things too which is why we are selling her “ALL DRESSED AND READY TO GO,” just the way we would love to find our next boat, hopefully at some point in the future.

One thought on “Heavenly Twins Mk4a Catamaran “Voile La” for sale.”

  1. I been looking for a yacht, and i found this beauty of yours. It looks like she is in good conditions, but how are the conditions of the sails? Can you tell me more about the history of the boat. How many owners it have had and so on?

I see that there is a lot of equipment on the yacht, are their conditions also good enough to fx. sail all the way to Denmark, with an experienced crew?

What is the standing height of the interior?

I am looking forward to hear from you

    Best regards:
